Study Shows Substantial Differences in Bearing Life

Round shaft bearings are able to offer a variety of superior performance features that other bearings are not able to offer, such as the ability to function in tight areas, thrive in harsh environments, and minimize vibration and shock. The whitepaper, PBC Linear’s Simplicity® Bearing vs. igus’s DryLin® Bearing, is an analytical comparison of two competing round shaft bearings, and uncovers the substantial differences in bearing life that should be expected. Next Generation Automated Checkout Improves Customer Experience

A Meijer grocery store in Georgetown, MI has started testing an NCR next generation self-check-out, which integrates PBC Linear’s Mechatronics Enabled product line, the SIMO Series. This new system is helping improve customer experience by lowering checkout time and hassle. The overall design moves items through an area where they can be scanned in whatever position they are placed. As the items move down the belt to the bagging area, they are put into one of three different bagging stations. Once all of the items have been conveyed into a specific bagging station, lift gates and diverter paddles are actuated by SIMO linear actuators to isolate the items in the occupied station as another station opens up for the next customer.

In vertical lead screw actuator applications, lead screw selection is crucial to the safety and success of the system. Prevention of load drift, or screw back drive, during a power loss condition starts with proper selection of a screw’s lead. As a rule of thumb, the lead selected should be at least 3 times smaller than the screw diameter. Less aggressive, finer leads offer increased load drift resistance & safety, however it will result in a negative effect reducing linear carriage travel speed. Alternatively, a more aggressive, coarse lead will offer faster carriage travel speeds, but will not typically provide any resistance to load drift.

On June 23rd, 2015; PBC Linear, Applied Motion Products (AMP), and 3DP Unlimited participated in the "World Series of Manufacturing" presented by HTE Technologies in St. Louis, MO at Busch Stadium. The event is the largest single distributor-sponsored educational forum and product/services trade show event ever to take place in St. Louis. Engineers were able to earn up to 7 PHD credits, participate in interactive product displays, tour Busch Stadium and attend some of the 28 technical seminar workshops throughout the day. Some of the 18 engineering disciplines represented by the 50+ manufacturers in attendance included Robots and Collaborative Robots, Sensors, Motion Control/Automation, Machine Safety, Vision Systems, Sensors, and 3D Printing.

PBC Linear recently exhibited at the Automation Technology Expo (ATX) in New York City, June 9-11, 2015. The NEW Compact Series Linear Guide System was displayed as a focal point in the booth. Visitors were impressed in with its strong product features, such as the 23 mm standard system height, the multiple bearing, lead screw and motor options; and the option to include either a standard nut or PBC’s patent pending Constant Force Technology anti-backlash nut. PBC Linear’s Mechatronics Enabled initiative was paired closely with core components that were also featured at the show, including Round Shaft Technology, Cam Roller Technology, Integral-V Technology and Gliding Surface Technology, creating a well-rounded, world-class linear motion line-up. The booth became irresistible to passers-by with the SIMO Series linear actuators providing a live demonstration via the large format 3D printer, the 3DP1000, from 3DP Unlimited.
