Foundry Finds Success With PBC’s Hevi-Rail®

Setting the Scene
Best known for manufacturing manhole covers, a well known foundry has been supplying quality castings for the last 135 years. A typical foundry deals in harsh environments, and this one was no exception. Metal particulates and other contaminants make smooth linear motion difficult throughout the production process.

PBC Linear came into contact with the customer after they were experiencing problems with their production lines. The casting tipper is used to divert a number of foundry castings after they have been molded; however the machine was experiencing massive downtime on account of failing cam followers. This caused the production line to fail and production costs to increase. Due to the harsh nature of the environment, and the massive load and force required to move the castings, PBC Linear recommended their Hevi-Rail system.

The Challenge
The production lines at the foundry are long and carry dozens of castings at a time. This load weighs tons and requires incredible force in order to be moved. The foundry attempted to use other heavy duty linear guide systems to restore the casting tipper; however they were not durable enough and failed within two weeks. PBC Linear was faced with the task of producing a solution that allowed the casting tipper to function properly with immense force and load without repeated failure.

The Solution
With its strong load capacity and ability to last in harsh environments, Hevi-Rail was the perfect solution. Hevi-Rail’s design disperses the weight and allows for the system to carry a massive amount of load without failure.

The Hevi-Rail system has kept the production lines running for 1-1/2 years and continues to function efficiently. As a result, the customer has experienced huge cost savings due to the lack of downtime and catastrophic failure.

Products Used
HVB056, HBP-2 and HVR-2 rail were all implemented into the foundry’s casting tipper and continue to function properly.
